This course reviews news consumption trends, and explores the lessons of social communities, innovative news sites and leading-edge technology - with lessons you can take home. |

| 2:45 p.m. | Covering Communities in New Ways Presenter: Ellyn Angelotti Why: Electronic media and mobile devices can help journalists gather news efficiently and effectively. Social networks, RSS feeds and online tools empower journalists to cover communities in new ways, helping them stay in touch with sources and develop new ways of finding stories and gathering information. |

| 4:30 p.m. | Alternative Distribution / Putting Feeds, Aggregation and Social Networking to Work Presenter: Ellyn Angelotti Why: News Web sites are becoming more than just content destinations, they are also information aggregators. Journalists are becoming more than just content creators - they are now also "sensemakers." We take a look at how journalists can reach new audiences using burgeoning alternative ways to share content with users and readers. Participants learn how newsrooms can use tools like social widgets, Twitter, You Tube, RSS feeds and newsletters to distribute news and information. |

This seminar delves into how to approach videos assignments with specific story forms. This allows better planning and presentation on the web, and enables the newsroom to be more strategic about using video resources. |

| 10:00 a.m. | Covering News Across Platforms Presenter: Michael Roberts Why: Editors need to plan for right now and the next now. This seminar explores how to cover breaking news across two platforms, in terms of staffing, approaches, deadlines and how online and print coverage will be the same or will differ. The session is an extended exercise in which participants plan coverage of a big story over the first 24 hours. |
